1. Five Optimal Questions

  1. Do I start each day with my best self in charge, or am I waiting for something or someone to inspire me?
  2. Do I contribute my best efforts, or am I an "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" person?
  3. Is my best self in charge of my relationships?
  4. Do I make the most of negative feedback?
  5. How does my best self deal with adversity?
When you ask the best questions, you invite the best solutions. You can submit up to one page of text about your business or personal challenges at https://www.optimalthinking.com/Form-custom-questions.html We will provide you with five customized Optimal questions to invite your best solutions within two business days.

2. Optimal Affirmation

I am making an optimal choice with Optimal Thinking right now.

Note: Optimal affirmations are verbal "act as if" creative statements. Be sure to jot down and resolve your unsupportive responses. Optimal Thinking is optimal realism. It is NOT wishful thinking!

3. Optimal Quotations

"My business is not to remake myself, but to make the absolute best of what God made."
Robert Browning (1812-89)

"Education is the best provision for old age."
Aristotle (384-322 BC)

4. Optimal Action Step For This Week

Think about all the areas in your life where you are settling for second best. Now ask: "How can I make the most of each situation?" "What is the most constructive action I can take right now?"

5. Ask Dr. Glickman

I am an experienced executive who has worked in a mid size organization for the past 12 years. One of my employees (the CEO's son) is a pessimist and drives me up the wall. When he took your Optimal Thinking Assessment online yesterday, his dominant level of thinking (a whopping 61%) was totally negative thinking. His next significant thinking style was mediocre negative thinking. 78% of his thinking was negative. Only 2% of his thinking was Optimal.

How can I help him to be his best? I am keen to implement optimal thinking. What is my next step?

Executive, Boston, MA
~~~~~~~~
Dear friend:
I understand your frustration with your employee's negative attitude, and certainly respect your desire to bring out the best from him. Unfortunately, the totally negative thinker believes: "I am a total loser. I can't get what I want, and I can't support you in getting what you want. Life is never fair." These people habitually focus on what's wrong, on limitations, and on destructive viewpoints. They think negatively about themselves, about others, and about circumstances, and are worried, depressed, and frustrated. Totally negative thinkers use words like: "hopeless", and "useless" and phrases like: "This will never work out", "Nothing gets done right here", and "People always let you down." They can bring others down and drain the enthusiasm from your team.
However, totally negative thinkers can be valuable. Totally negative thinkers warn us of imminent danger. They spot mistakes, inaccuracies, and flaws in products, services, and projects, and explore the source of problems so that they can be rectified. When totally negative thinkers integrate Optimal Thinking, they are your best Quality Control personnel. After they pinpoint flaws, they determine what is out of their control, and then immediately optimize what is within their control.
From your note, your employee appears to have completed the full version of the online Optimal Thinking Self-Assessment at http://www.optimalthinking.com/assess and hasn't yet invited Observers to rate his thinking and performance. I am wondering if you have provided him with access to his 21-page Self-Optimization Report. I recommend you allow your employee to view his Report. Even predominantly negative thinkers love to learn about their dominant level of thinking, their hierarchy of thinking styles (the thinking styles they use less often), and discover how much of their thinking is in their best interest.Your employee will gain insight into the advantages and disadvantages of his dominant thinking style and his other thinking styles. He will also learn about his core motivation, stressors, life motto, and how he relates to others at home and in the workplace. Most importantly, he will learn how to be his best, and optimize his interactions with others, regardless of the circumstances.
I also recommend that you encourage your employee to invite Observers to rate his thinking and performance. In his personalized 41-page Composite Report (Self plus Observers), he will then see how others view his strengths and weaknesses. Although Observers' input is anonymous, your employee will discover his blind spots (areas where there is discrepancy between his self-rating and Observer's ratings). He will also learn how to use Optimal Thinking to optimize conversations with his superiors, and others at home and at work.
After he has read his Report, I suggest that you discuss the results with him privately. Ask questions like: "What did you learn about yourself?" "How can you put this information to best use?" "What can I do to bring out the best in you?"
You can take the comprehensive Optimal Thinking Online 360° Assessment and receive a personalized 21-page Self-Optimization report (without Observer input) or invite Observers and receive a 41-page report at http://www.optimalthinking.com/assess
