Los Angeles, January 20, 2004 – Analyzing President Bush’s highest priority in his State of the Union addresses, Rosalene Glickman, Ph.D., strategic thinking expert, and best-selling author of Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self (John Wiley & Sons), has expressed her concern over the preponderance of misguided optimism (hoping for the best) and mediocre thinking.

Dr. Glickman emphasizes: “When the cost of failure and/or the probability of failure is high, optimism is the wrong strategy. With the current threat of terrorism, we can’t afford to hope for the best or settle for second best by thinking suboptimally. We must optimize — rather than improve or manage — our situation and protect the worst event scenario with optimal contingency plans. By asking optimal questions, we will invite optimal solutions. Optimal Thinking is what we need right now. It’s the fail-safe style of thinking whose time has come.”

Dr. Glickman is currently available for media interviews to comment further on the strengths and shortcomings of previous State of the Union addresses — and grade the 2004 State of the Union address. She will explain how to create the most constructive solutions in even the most difficult circumstances.
